CoLucid Pharmaceuticals

CoLucid Pharmaceuticals

Founded by Pappas Ventures in 2005, CoLucid is a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company developing therapeutics to treat neurological dysfunctions. CoLucid's lead asset is lasmiditan, a potent and selective 5-HT1F receptor agonist licensed from Eli Lilly & Co. that has the potential to be useful in the acute treatment of migraine headaches. CoLucid’s lead asset, lasmiditan, has been shown to be safe and effective in Phase 2b trials.

CoLucid completed a successful IPO in 2015 and was acquired by Eli Lilly & Co. for nearly $1 billion in 2017.

Chimerix

Located just around the corner from us in Durham, NC, Chimerix is developing a pipeline of therapeutics that address life-threatening viral diseases. The company derives its product candidates from Phospholipid Intramembrane Microfluidization Conjugate Technology, which can enhance the activity, bioavailability and safety of useful drugs. This technology has given rise to two clinical-stage compounds that have demonstrated the potential for enhanced antiviral activity and safety. Chimerix’s lead compound, brincidofovir (BCV), is a broad-spectrum oral antiviral agent that is initially being developed for the treatment of CMV and AdV in transplant patients.

Chimerix raised over $100 million in its initial public offering in April 2013.

Cerexa

Cerexa developed hospital-based anti-infective therapies for the treatment of patients with serious, life-threatening infections. Formed in the spring of 2005 as a spin-out from Peninsula Pharmaceuticals, it was sold to Forest Laboratories in 2007 for nearly $500 million. In 2010, the FDA approved its lead product, TeflaroTM (ceftaroline fosamil), a broad-spectrum bactericidal cephalosporin with activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. No Pappas Ventures portfolio company has progressed more rapidly from company creation to exit to FDA product approval.

Cequent Pharmaceuticals

Cequent, which was acquired by Marina Biotech in 2010, developed new, clinically compatible therapies based on RNA interference (RNAi) therapies. The company focused its efforts on the pre-clinical development of products to treat gastrointestinal diseases, including familial polyposis, inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer.

CeNeRx BioPharma

The company pursued development of a reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase (MAOI) for treatment resistant depression. In addition, the company assembled a pipeline of selective cannabinoid compounds for the treatment of pain, glaucoma, and obesity.

CardioDx

Our initial investment in the personalized diagnostics space, CardioDx developed and is now marketing Corus® CAD, a gene expression algorithm-based blood test for the detection of significant atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD). The test was developed in collaboration with leading academic groups, including Duke University. The test is regulated under CLIA guidelines and performed at an onsite laboratory in Palo Alto.

Strategically focused on coronary artery disease, cardiac arrhythmia, and heart failure, CardioDx is poised to expand patient access and improve healthcare quality and efficiency through the commercialization of genomic technologies.

Calyx Therapeutics

Calyx focused on oral therapies for diabetes and inflammatory diseases, utilizing natural plant extracts with demonstrated clinical activity in humans as the source of its discovery efforts. Working with this company, Pappas Ventures expanded our expertise in oral therapies. Theracos acquired the company’s assets in 2003.

BrainCells

The company’s lead clinical program is based on the principal of blocking or antagonizing select metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR), which are associated with a number of CNS diseases. The company’s lead compound, BCI-632 and its prodrug, BCI-838, have been extensively studied in preclinical models for major depressive disorder, treatment resistant depression and potentially Alzheimer’s disease. BCI completed a Phase 1 study for BCI-838 and plans to initiate a proof of concept trial for treatment resistant depression.

BrainCells represents a novel approach to the way CNS drugs are discovered.

BioSyntech

BioSyntech specialized in the development, manufacturing and commercialization of biotherapeutic thermogels for regenerative medicine (tissue repair) and therapeutic delivery. The company’s assets were acquired in 2010 by Piramal Healthcare Ltd.
